MJS Landscaping Services, a commercial and residential landscaping company headquartered in Waukesha, Wisconsin, is marking its 29th year in operation. Founded in May 1997 by Mike Steiner, the company provides landscape maintenance, design, installation, and snow and ice management services to commercial and residential property owners in the Waukesha area and across southeast Wisconsin.
Steiner started the company with a focus on commercial landscape maintenance, building the business around landscaping work that balanced appearance with long-term function. He continues to lead MJS as chief executive officer. Over nearly three decades, the company has grown from a single service line into a full-service landscaping operation with dedicated commercial and residential divisions.
The commercial division remains the foundation of the business. Its crews provide landscape maintenance and irrigation services for business properties, caring for grounds, plantings, and irrigation systems throughout the growing season. During the winter months, the company’s snow and ice management program covers commercial sidewalks, parking lots, and building access points on a 24-hour basis during weather events. The company says the program is intended to reduce slip-and-fall risk for tenants, employees, and visitors.
In the fall of 1999, two years after its founding, MJS launched a residential design-build division focused on custom outdoor living spaces. Since then, the division has received more than 25 industry awards for its projects. Residential projects begin with a complimentary on-site consultation. The design team then prepares a detailed proposal that includes a 3D-animated rendering of the planned landscape, so homeowners can review the finished design before construction begins.
Beyond design and installation, the residential division provides seasonal color plantings, tree and arbor care including pruning and pest control, and stormwater management and erosion control. After a project is complete, the company offers ongoing maintenance, including seasonal enhancements and irrigation repair, so finished landscapes continue to receive care over time.
Much of the company’s knowledge rests with its people. Many members of the MJS team have been with the company for years, and together they bring decades of combined experience in landscape design, installation, and maintenance to each project. That continuity allows crews and designers to build working knowledge of the properties they serve and the clients who own them, an approach the company expects to carry forward as it approaches its 30th anniversary in May 2027.
