ChilliPrinting Warns: Print Labor Shortage Is Here to Stay

With 72% of print service providers struggling to hire production staff, ChilliPrinting warns that the industry’s labor gap is structural, not seasonal.

WILMINGTON, DE, UNITED STATES, October 19, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Print buyers facing slower quotes and longer lead times shouldn’t expect relief soon. According to an analysis from ChilliPrinting, the commercial printing industry’s labor shortage has moved beyond a hiring headache. It is now a structural problem, and businesses should plan around it rather than wait it out.

Industry research from 2024 reported by Printing Impressions shows 72% of print service providers struggle to hire production staff. A 2022 industry report found employers unable to fill 36% of open positions for more than a year. Two forces are converging. The workforce is aging, and offset presses are reaching end of life at the same time as the operators who run them reach retirement. And the production floor still carries an image problem: as HP PageWide’s Barbara McManus told Printing Impressions in March 2026, print facilities are finding that clean, quiet digital rooms are “where people want to work.”

The gap is sharpest on the production floor. Analog press operators are increasingly difficult to replace. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment of prepress technicians (the staff who check and prepare customer files before printing) to decline 14.6% between 2024 and 2034. Short-staffed binderies leave finished jobs waiting to be cut, folded, and packed. For buyers, that means rising costs, longer lead times, and more file errors reaching the press.

“If your lead times have stretched, the cause probably isn’t the press. It’s the people who should be standing next to it,” said Chris Collins, Head of Marketing at ChilliPrinting. “This gap isn’t closing, so the difference between print partners will come down to how they’ve adapted. Ask your vendor how they’re solving for people. The answer will tell you a lot about your lead times in 2027.”

Questions buyers should ask their printer:
– Is automated prepress used to catch file errors?
– Is there enough skilled staff to run extra shifts during busy periods?
– How are new production staff recruited and trained?
