For households holding VHS tapes, the decision comes down to three routes: a disc, a USB drive, or files held online.
A VHS to DVD transfer places footage on a disc that plays on standard DVD players, gaming consoles, computers with disc drives and car head units, which suits viewing on a television. A VHS to USB converter service instead returns the footage as files on a single pen drive, ready to play, save or copy on a computer or smart TV. The third route keeps the files online, with a private access link allowing playback and download from any location. The company states that cloud access runs for one year and can be renewed.
One order of each output type covers an entire batch of tapes, so a collection does not need to be split across several discs or drives. Betamax, Super VHS and VHS-C cassettes are handled alongside standard VHS.
Condition is assessed before transfer begins. Tapes are inspected on arrival, and splicing, rehousing into new cassette shells and cleaning are carried out where needed, including on tapes affected by mould. Where a first transfer shows quality problems, the tape is run again on different machines and settings, and the strongest version is kept. The company reports that around 95 per cent of tapes are digitised with good picture quality, and that more than 99 per cent are transferred successfully regardless of condition.
Several technical details carry across from tape to file. The original 4:3 aspect ratio is retained rather than cropped, date stamps recorded by older camcorders remain visible, and subtitles hardcoded into the video signal stay in place. Both PAL and NTSC recordings are accepted. Commercially released tapes fall outside the service, as UK copyright law does not permit their duplication.
Work on converting VHS to digital formats is carried out in the United Kingdom at the company’s North Yorkshire premises. Original tapes are returned alongside the finished digital copies, with notification when an order arrives and when it is sent back. Turnaround is around seven days from receipt, and most video tape orders are completed and returned within one to two weeks.
