Please keep these warm-weather safety reminders in mind from The Humane Society:
• Never leave pets in a parked car. Even with cracked windows, temperatures inside a vehicle can quickly become dangerously hot.
• Protect sensitive paws. Test pavement with the back of your hand before walks, and aim for early morning or evening walks when surfaces are cooler.
• Keep fresh water nearby. Make sure pets always have access to cool drinking water at home and bring water along for walks and adventures.
• Create cool spaces. Provide plenty of shade and cool resting areas, and consider a shallow kiddie pool to help pets beat the heat.
• Watch for signs of overheating. Heavy panting, excessive drooling, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, rapid heartbeat, or difficulty walking may signal heat-related illness.
• Take it easy outdoors. Especially during wildfire season, shorten walks and vigorous play during the hottest parts of the day, and pay attention to your pet’s comfort and energy level.
